The Art of Getting Things Done

I have been inspired by a very good friend of mine to think about getting things done. What is it that makes some people so eager to finish the tasks they started and why is it so easy for some other people to simply leave things be?

Leave in the middle. Leave when the end is almost there but things haven’t quite reached the finish line. Or leave after the very beginning because they suddenly realized that it is just not fun as they thought it would be.

Oh, I so wish I could tell you that I am the gets-things-done type, but as I turn my head to my beautiful book collection, I am faced with a harsh reality. I leave things be. As proud I am on my book collection, I could easily give you five that I have started and never finished. I have been planning to do it, but.... I don’t know..

But, it’s just books, we all have books that we haven’t finished reading, right?

Then what about tasks? What about errands? What about life?

When it comes to tasks, I have been improving heavily in that area and I will perfect it. I think that is related to my goals setting and achievement obsession. You know what, the “Goals” by Brian Tracy is the book I have finished reading.

I can tell you that I still haven’t completely finished any of my Personal To-Do Lists. The one at job though I get easily done.

I guess I get payed for the second one. Or is there a bigger difference there, a more important influencing factor?

And then errands... Errands I hate the most. What are actually errands?

I have come to realize they’re those small things that once finished, make your life easier and more enjoyable. They usually take just few minutes or maybe few hours to finish and  after them you do feel relived. Like, fixing your car’s broken glass. I did that today. I did postpone it for two weeks first. It did cost money. But I have finished it. My car is so pretty right now.

You know what, I’m going to test it this week and then give you an update.

I’m going to make my list and try to finish it completely, each task and each errand that I plan.

Now, there might be some of you saying that life is only once and that sometimes just leaving things be is a good choice. Maybe you shouldn’t finish the book you don’t like. Maybe it’s okay to postpone that errand because there is something better that you have planned to do with that time anyway.

And if there is, I support you.

But is there actually? That errand would only take a few minutes anyway. That task when multiplied with a certain amount of days would lead you to an amazing goal or dream that you wanted for a long time.

Aren’t you just going to go home after work and just watch your newest drama?

Is that feeling better or the feeling of finally finishing something you have been delaying for the third day, week or month in a row. It took me two months to go to the dentist.

Then just one day after work, out of nowhere, I went for a check up and scheduled it for Saturday, morning. Now I have great teeth.

So how do you feel about this? Do you finish what you started easily and is it annoying if you don’t or do you just postpone it until it just needs to be done?

If you’re not sure, just ask yourself - Is there something I’m postponing right now?
